Key Takeaways:
June is a slightly slower month than May when it comes to periodic disclosures. Twenty-one states, six localities, and the Canadian Federal Government have periodic disclosure reports due this month. In states such as Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and Louisiana, lobbying is regulated by the branches lobbied (e.g., executive, legislative, judicial, local). If you are registered to lobby in multiple branches within one of these states you may be required to complete additional disclosure reports. With summer almost here and most legislative sessions already adjourned for the year or adjourning soon, keep in mind that many jurisdictions still require reporting even after sine die. Don’t let your summer fun be spoiled by a missed deadline!
The following localities also have disclosure reports due in June:
State | Localities |
California | City and County of San Francisco |
City of San Jose | |
Florida | Broward County Health |
New Jersey | Jersey City |
New York | Nassau County |
Washington | City of Seattle |
Lobbying in a locality can trigger registration and reporting requirements as well. In states like New York, lobbying any locality or municipality will require a state registration and state bi-monthly disclosure reports, even if you do not lobby at the state level. If you lobby in New York, make sure you are registered with the New York State Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (COELIG) to avoid hefty fines.
At the end of June, lobbyist registrations in three states and four local jurisdictions (all in Florida) expire. Registration renewals for the next lobbying year are currently underway, so you should pay very close attention to your jurisdictions to avoid missing a critical renewal deadline. The map below shows which states had expiring registrations at the end of June.
The following localities’ registrations will also expire in June and will need to be renewed if lobbying activity is planned to continue in 2024.
State | Localities |
Florida | Miami-Dade Public Schools |
Broward County | |
Broward County Health | |
Broward County Public Schools |
In June, 19 states have campaign finance disclosure deadlines, plus the District of Columbia and the Federal Election Commission (FEC). If a political committee is registered in one of these states and is required to file disclosure reports, they must do so in June. Check out the map below for the states with important deadlines this month.
Political committees should be aware of their filing schedules. Some jurisdictions (Texas, for example) give the option to report monthly or quarterly. Also, be aware that some states require a political committee to report large contributions within a set time frame of receipt. Political committees should review contributions carefully to ensure they do not miss a required contribution- or expenditure-triggered deadline.
